VENEZIA - HOME SHIRT 2023/2024

Venezia were founded on 14 December 1907 and are one of football's most romantic clubs, playing in the heart of the floating city of Venice. Known as I Leoni Alati (The Winged Lions) in tribute to the winged Lion of St Mark that watches over the lagoon, they are also fondly called Gli Arancioneroverdi (The Orange, Black and Greens) after their unmistakable colours. Their home is the Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo, which opened in 1913 and ranks among the oldest grounds in Italy. Perched on the little island of Sant'Elena, it is one of the few stadiums in the world that visiting supporters and players regularly reach by boat.

The 2023/2024 season, during which this stylish home shirt was worn, was Venezia's 117th and their second consecutive campaign in Serie B. Under manager Paolo Vanoli, the Lagunari put together a determined promotion push and finished third in the table, booking their place in the end-of-season play-offs with a return to Serie A at stake.

What this season is best remembered for is the drama of that play-off run. After coming through the semi-finals, Venezia faced Cremonese over two legs in the final. A tense goalless draw away in Cremona left everything to play for, and back on the island the Penzo roared as Christian Gytkjaer struck the only goal to win the tie 1-0 and seal promotion to the top flight.

Leading the line all season was Finnish striker Joel Pohjanpalo, whose 22 goals included a memorable hat-trick in a 5-3 win over Ascoli. His finishing was the engine of Venezia's brief return to Serie A.
