Manchester United were founded in 1878 as Newton Heath LYR, taking their present name in 1902, and are one of the most decorated and widely supported clubs on earth. They play at Old Trafford, the "Theatre of Dreams" in the Stretford area of Greater Manchester and the largest club ground in English football, a stadium that has staged their football since 1910.

2016/2017, the season this striking home shirt was worn, was United's 25th in the Premier League and their first under Jose Mourinho, appointed to replace Louis van Gaal. United finished sixth in the league, going a club-record 25 matches unbeaten across one stretch, though 12 of those games were drawn and a top-four place slipped away.

The cups told a happier story. United beat Leicester City 2-1 in the Community Shield to open the season, then edged Southampton 3-2 in the EFL Cup final at Wembley. In Europe they went all the way, seeing off Saint-Etienne, Rostov, Anderlecht and Celta Vigo before beating Ajax 2-0 in the Europa League final in Stockholm, a win that made them only the fifth club to have won all three major European trophies and sent them back into the Champions League.

Paul Pogba had returned from Juventus that summer for a then world-record 89 million pounds, but the campaign belonged to Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The veteran Swede top-scored with 28 goals in all competitions, including the 87th-minute winner in the League Cup final and his first United hat-trick against Saint-Etienne.
