JEF UNITED CHIBA - ANNIVERSARY SHIRT 2016

JEF United Ichihara Chiba are one of Japanese football's founding names, tracing their roots to 1946 and the works team of Furukawa Electric. Based in Chiba, east of Tokyo, and playing at the Fukuda Denshi Arena, affectionately known as "Fukuari", they were ever-present in the J.League's top flight from its 1993 launch until relegation in 2009. The "JEF" initials nod to original backers Japan Railways East and Furukawa Electric, and the club remain one of the second division's best-supported sides.

By 2016 they were deep into their long campaign to climb back out of J2. Takashi Sekizuka began the season in charge before Shigetoshi Hasebe took the reins, and the side eventually finished 11th in the 22-team second tier, posting 13 wins, 14 draws and 15 defeats for 53 points, well short of the promotion play-off places. This commemorative release, marking seventy years since those 1946 origins, captures a proud old club still chasing a return to the elite.

There were plenty of bright afternoons along the way. JEF beat eventual promotion winners Cerezo Osaka 3-0 at home late in the run-in, saw off Fagiano Okayama and Giravanz Kitakyushu, and traded goals in a 3-4 thriller with Shimizu S-Pulse. Consistency was the problem rather than quality, a maddening pattern for the Fukuari faithful.

Up front, Yamato Machida led the scoring with 11 league goals, spearheading an attack that racked up 52 in all. The season underlined both the promise and the frustration of this era, a club too good to drop further yet unable to find the final gear.
