HERTHA BERLIN - HOME SHIRT 2010/2011

Hertha BSC were founded in 1892 in the German capital, and remain one of Berlin's grand old institutions, fondly nicknamed "Die Alte Dame" (The Old Lady). They play their home games at the vast Olympiastadion, the arena built for the 1936 Olympic Games. A lovely piece of trivia: the club took both its name and its blue and white colours from a steamship called Hertha, on which one founder's father had once enjoyed a memorable day trip.

The 2010/2011 campaign, during which this understated home shirt was worn, was spent in the 2. Bundesliga following relegation the previous spring. Under manager Markus Babbel, Hertha bounced straight back, finishing first in the second tier to seal both promotion and the title. They confirmed their return to the top flight with a 1-0 win over MSV Duisburg with three games to spare, then clinched the championship with a 2-0 defeat of Erzgebirge Aue.

There was little in the way of cup drama to savour. In the DFB-Pokal, Hertha were eliminated in the second round, ending their knockout hopes early. The season's real theatre came instead in the league, not least the electric Berlin derby against local rivals Union Berlin, which drew a heaving crowd of 74,228 to the Olympiastadion.

Colombian forward Adrián Ramos led the way, scoring 15 league goals (17 in all competitions) as the division's standout marksman. Young German striker Pierre-Michel Lasogga chipped in with 13 league goals of his own, while Brazilian playmaker Raffael added 10, a potent attacking trio that powered Hertha's promotion charge.
