GAMBA OSAKA - GOALKEEPER AWAY SHIRT 2004
Gamba Osaka are a Kansai institution, founded in 1980 as the works team of electronics giant Matsushita (now Panasonic) and admitted as one of the ten original J.League clubs when the league kicked off in 1993. They are based in Suita, on the northern fringe of Osaka, and in 2004 they played their football at the cavernous Expo '70 Commemorative Stadium, a leftover from the World's Fair, long before the move to their smart modern home at the Panasonic Stadium. The name itself is a lovely piece of wordplay, borrowing the Italian gamba (leg) while echoing the Japanese ganbaru, meaning to dig in and never give up. Supporters simply call them Gamba.
The 2004 campaign was the year Akira Nishino's bold, front-foot side truly announced itself, during which this goalkeeper shirt was worn. Gamba finished third in the sixteen-team J1, agonisingly close to the summit, and the conviction gathered that season carried directly into the championship they lifted twelve months later in 2005. Nishino backed youth and adventure in equal measure, and few teams in the land were as thrilling to watch.
Gamba were a goal machine throughout, boasting one of the most feared attacks in Japan and trading blows in a title race that ran deep into the autumn before they narrowly fell short. There was heartbreak in the near miss, yet it forged a group that would go on to rule Japan in 2005 and conquer the whole continent by winning the 2008 AFC Champions League. The foundations of a golden era were poured that year.
In goal stood Naoki Matsuyo, all but ever-present with 29 of a possible 30 league appearances as the dependable last line behind that adventurous front. Ahead of him, Masashi Oguro enjoyed the season of his career, top-scoring with 20 league goals and playing his way into the Japan set-up, while the young Yasuhito Endo, later a national-team centurion, was already conducting matters from deep with nine goals of his own.
