CELTA VIGO - HOME SHIRT 2017/2018
Real Club Celta de Vigo were formed in 1923 from the merger of two local sides, Real Vigo Sporting and Real Fortuna, in the Galician port city of Vigo. Known to their faithful as Os Celestes (the Sky Blues), they play at the atmospheric Estadio de Balaídos, perched close to the Ría de Vigo. The club's sky-blue identity and Celtic name are a proud nod to the ancient Celtic heritage of Galicia in Spain's rugged north-west.
The 2017/2018 campaign, during which this classy home shirt was worn, was overseen by head coach Juan Carlos Unzué in what proved his only season at the helm. Celta finished 13th in La Liga on 49 points, the product of 13 wins, 10 draws and 15 defeats, scoring a healthy 59 goals but shipping 60 at the other end. It was a season of two halves: Unzué's side climbed as high as seventh around the midway point before a run of late stumbles dragged them back into mid-table.
There was no European football this time, so attention turned to the Copa del Rey. Celta battled through to the Round of 16, only to run into eventual winners Barcelona, who ended the cup adventure. In the league, the Balaídos crowd were treated to plenty of open, attacking football, the trademark of a Vigo side that prefers to entertain rather than sit back and defend.
The talisman, as ever, was Iago Aspas. The Galician forward plundered 22 goals in La Liga (23 in all competitions), a return that made him one of the division's deadliest marksmen and earned a place in Spain's squad for the 2018 World Cup. Summer signing Maxi Gómez chipped in with goals of his own, giving Celta a dangerous strike partnership.
