BORUSSIA DORTMUND - AWAY SHIRT 2015/2016
Borussia Dortmund were founded in 1909 in the industrial Ruhr city of Dortmund, and are known to their faithful as Die Schwarzgelben (the Black and Yellows) or simply der BVB. They play at the vast Signal Iduna Park, still lovingly called the Westfalenstadion, whose 81,359 capacity makes it Germany's largest ground. Its towering Südtribüne, the Yellow Wall, is the biggest standing terrace in European football and one of the sport's great sights.
The 2015/2016 season, during which this striking away shirt was worn, marked a fresh start under new head coach Thomas Tuchel, who had taken over from the departing Jürgen Klopp. The response was emphatic: after a disappointing seventh place the previous year, Dortmund surged to second in the Bundesliga on 78 points, scoring 82 goals but finishing runners-up to a relentless Bayern Munich.
There were deep cup runs too. Dortmund reached the DFB-Pokal final, only to lose to Bayern on penalties after a goalless draw. In the Europa League they advanced to the quarter-finals, where they were edged out by Jürgen Klopp's Liverpool, losing 5-4 on aggregate after a breathless 4-3 defeat at Anfield.
The season belonged to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, whose 25 Bundesliga goals (39 in all competitions) made him one of Europe's deadliest forwards. Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Marco Reus provided plenty of goals and creativity behind him, while a teenage Christian Pulisic made his first senior appearances and midfielder Julian Weigl announced himself as a future star.
