Benfica 2024/2025 Third Shirt

BENFICA - THIRD SHIRT 2024/2025

Sport Lisboa e Benfica were founded on 28 February 1904 in Lisbon, and remain the most decorated club in Portugal. Known to supporters as As Águias (The Eagles), Os Encarnados (The Reds) and O Glorioso (The Glorious One), they play their home football at the vast Estádio da Luz (Stadium of Light), rebuilt in 2003. In February 2025 the club passed 400,000 registered members, making them, at the time, the largest sports club in the world by membership, a staggering measure of the passion that follows this famous Eagle-emblazoned side.

The 2024/2025 season, during which this striking third shirt was worn, brought both drama and heartbreak. Roger Schmidt was dismissed in early September with the team seventh, and Bruno Lage returned to steady the ship. Benfica surged to 80 points (25 wins, five draws, four defeats) but finished second in the Primeira Liga, just two points behind champions Sporting CP. It was a title lost by the finest of margins.

There was silverware and gallant continental runs to savour. Benfica lifted the Taça da Liga, seeing off Braga in the semi-final before beating Sporting on penalties in the final. They lost the Taça de Portugal final 3-1 after extra time to that same Sporting side. In the Champions League they overcame Monaco in the play-off before Barcelona ended their run in the last 16.

Vangelis Pavlidis was the standout, plundering 30 goals in all competitions, including a memorable hat-trick in the 4-1 thrashing of Porto, while veteran Ángel Di María added guile and class throughout.
