Los Leones (The Lions) play their football at San Mamés, the ground affectionately christened La Catedral (The Cathedral) for the reverence in which Basque supporters hold it. The club are famous for their cantera policy of fielding only Basque players, and they are one of just three sides, alongside Real Madrid and Barcelona, never to have been relegated from La Liga.

The 2019/2020 campaign, during which this classic home shirt was worn, was the club's 121st season and their 89th in the top flight. Under head coach Gaizka Garitano, Athletic finished 11th in La Liga with 51 points from their 38 matches, a mid-table return in a season split in two by the COVID-19 pandemic that forced the closing rounds to be played behind closed doors.

Where the season truly came alive was in the Copa del Rey. Athletic knocked out Barcelona in the quarter-finals, Iñaki Williams settling a tense night at San Mamés with a stoppage-time winner in a 1-0 victory. They then edged past Granada in the semi-finals on away goals after a 2-2 aggregate, booking a place in the 2020 Copa del Rey Final against Basque rivals Real Sociedad, a fixture later postponed by the pandemic and eventually played in front of empty stands the following year.

Raúl García led the scoring charts with 15 goals in all competitions, but the moment fans treasure most came on the opening day. Aritz Aduriz, in what would prove his final season before retirement, climbed off the bench to win the game against Barcelona with an 89th-minute overhead kick, a piece of magic from the veteran striker that instantly entered club folklore.

Follow the club on X: @AthleticClub
